A typical example of a longsword.
|Class of Weapon||Sword|
A longsword was a popular medieval European weapon classified by the cruciform hilt and long, straight blade.
A longsword typically has a blade length of about 39-48 inches, with a hilt that may or may not accomodate both a users hands. The blade is double edged and can be crafted with a variety of fullers to strengthen the blade.
- In reality it only came into use in the 13th century and so the soldiers of The Pillars of the Earth would only have used something similar to it, as opposed to an actual longsword.
- The longsword is the most popular bladed weapon to be used in fiction and is often attributed as the 'sword'.
